Fresh Beat Band Star Tommy Hobson Visits 

Small Hope Bay Lodge!

Fresh Beat Band star Tommy Hobson, visited Small Hope Bay Lodge a month ago. Originally known as The JumpArounds, The Fresh Beat Band is an American preschool show has been airing on Nikelodeon since 2009 and has received many awards since its premiere. Tommy plays a character named "Shout", who is a member of a band called "Fresh Beats". The band is made up of four members, Twist, Kiki, Marina and Shout. Shout is the keyboard man and vocalist. The concept of each episode begins with the band singing about a problem that the band will soon comes across. Throughout the episode, the band manages to solve the problem. At the end the band sings their closing song, which includes what the problem was and how they dealt with it.

Hobson has also made many television appearances. Most notably he has starred in Free Enterprise and Clubhouse Detectives. Hobson started acting at the age of 6 and received a B.A. in theater from Yale University.

Sailing the seas of the Bahamas . . .

At Small Hope there are so many things to do - scuba diving, fishing (deep-sea, reef and bonefishing), kayaking, nature tours, bike riding, snorkeling, hammocking (we take that very seriously). 

The other day, Divemaster Fede decided to take the sailboat out for a spin. Since it was such a beautiful autumn day he took the GoPro camera out with him. Then he had a little fun on iMovie . . .

Two Family’s of Friends

When we were shopping around for a vacation, we looked at tons of websites to find a place for our family’s vacation, after spending time on the phone and exchanging emails with the staff, we settled on Small Hope Bay Lodge.

We arrived and were immediately offered drinks and lunch. We spent our first night weathering a tropical storm. The cabins are rustic but sturdy and at 20 feet from the water, it was an amazing kick off to a great week.

We have made new friends, gained new skills (SCUBA for 12 year olds) and relaxed. The setting while rustic, is beautiful and scène. Everyone was extremely helpful and lovely. We travelled with a 1 year old and found it very easy to accommodate. We will be back next year!!!

Family Vacation Time

Here at Small Hope we are always excite to welcome new guest and it was our pleasure of hosting the Mitchell family earlier in the new. Here are a few words from Jeff, Lisa, Katie and Abby...........

We arrived at Small Hope Bay Lodge as novice divers and after one week, we feel like seasoned veterans, from the professionalism and expertise of the dive staff, to the friendliness and attentive service of the entire Small Hope Bay family. Our first stay was wonderful and it won’t be our last!! Until next time, thank you for a relaxing and exhilarating vacation. We came away from Andros with irreplaceable memories and a new passion for diving!!!!

Graduation Day!

After all the explorers went exploring, birdwatchers went birdwatching, divers went diving, and fishermen went fishing, Small Hope hosted the graduation of Andros’ Christian Academy right outside on the patio. Many came to watch as the kids sang, spoke, and reminisced about their experiences.


We were fortunate enough to watch Moose’s son, Ethan, along with Jeff’s youngest son, Christian, get their diplomas as they were graduating from Preschool. Congratulations boys!

Fun as a Family

George, Marilyn and daughter, Jen spent their time at Small Hope Bay Lodge relaxing, reading and catching up. Jen learned how to dive and after a couple of white knuckle adventures with Divemaster Loren, she is practically a fish!

The staff enjoyed hanging out with this family so much that when Divemasters Loren and Amanda made a jaunt to Nassau on their day off, they met up with the family to have breakfast. We all can't wait to see them again! Pin It Now!

Small Hope Staff Party

To celebrate the close of the 2008-2009 season, the entire staff at SHBL had their annual meeting and staff party. The entire staff - dive, maintenance, kitchen and housekeeping got together to enjoy a delicious Bahamian meal and a fishing expedition.

First, we had to take care of the serious stuff and Jeff went over the customer exit surveys for the year. We learned that for the fifth year running, we have scored 100% in the customer service category! Thank you to everyone who returned a survey this year. We do read them and we do learn from them!

After the business was taken care of, the staff split up onto two boats and headed out to the reef to do some fishing. It was a tight competition between the boats to see who could haul in the most catch -- it was especially tight between our two best fisherman, Austin and Terrance!

We then all moved to Goat Cay for some music and relaxation. Gearing up for our 50th season is keeping us busy so the staff all enjoyed our day in the sun!

Captain Bill's Inland Blue Hole

Small Hope Bay Lodge took 15 guests and two car loads 20 minutes down the road and into the inland Andros to visit Captain Bill’s Fresh water inland Blue Hole.
Blue Holes are submarine cave systems. Their name is derived from the fact that when viewed from the air, they often have a deep blue color--deeper and bluer than the waters that surround them. To understand their formation, one needs to go back to the beginning of the Bahama Islands themselves, back over 150 million years ago when marine sediments began to accumulate in the warm shallow seas of the tropical Atlantic. (The origins of the name Bahamas is from the Spanish words Baja Mar, meaning shallow sea). It was during this time that early corals began to colonize along the banks of sediment. These tiny corals slowly grew to form a fringing reef, which eventually solidified into limestone barriers, which in turn acted as retaining walls, trapping the sediments. Andros Island has over 350 known inland and ocean blue holes.
You can take the plunge from 15 feet off the dock to cannonball into the freshwater, or walk down the dock and slip right in. Many of the guests enjoyed their afternoon jumping, swimming and keeping their eyes peeled for the legendary Lusca. The Lusca is a old myth of a half-octopus half-shark monster that lives in the Blue Hole, this kept many of the children on the island from diving too deep into the water, so their parents could keep an eye on them! Although no Lusca was spotted the guests enjoyed their afternoon of swimming, and their cannonball competition where eleven-year-old Isabella beat everyone with her record of 46 cannonballs off the dock!
