Summer is well under way.......
The summer is half over now and that means closing time for Small Hope, and that means it is time to spruce the place up ready for another season!!
Dive intern Kate has finished her Rescue Diver Course, so a big CONGRATULATIONS to her!!
It is unfortunate that dive master Antonio is leaving us at the beginning of August, we wish him all the best in the future.
With Antonio leaving us we were in need of some new dive staff, so let us introduce you to Erin from Chico, California and Federico fromArgentina they have joined the Small Hope team.
Scuba and Sassy are growing bigger everyday and a big thank you to Kelly and Mason Weaver for the puppies care package!
A big thank you to all our Summer Interns, Petter, Simen, Ben, Rodney, Luke and Davis, it has been fun working with you all!
It was a great treat the other day for dive master Joe, while diving out near the old compressor frame at the dock two dolphins swam by!!

Graduation Day!
After all the explorers went exploring, birdwatchers went birdwatching, divers went diving, and fishermen went fishing, Small Hope hosted the graduation of Andros’ Christian Academy right outside on the patio. Many came to watch as the kids sang, spoke, and reminisced about their experiences.

We were fortunate enough to watch Moose’s son, Ethan, along with Jeff’s youngest son, Christian, get their diplomas as they were graduating from Preschool. Congratulations boys!

More Nature Walking on Andros Island
The guests at Small Hope Bay Lodge decided to participate in a little eco tourism on Andros Island by taking advantage of one of our nature walks. Usually the walks are self-guided but Divemaster Loren lead the way for the guests, explaining many of the native plants and sharing some of the folklore associated with bush medicine, which is still practiced throughout the Bahamas. Lee, who is an avid birder, brought along her binoculars and saw a couple of different native birds!

Birding and Nature Walking on Andros Island
Torrey and Lee joined us at Small Hope Bay Lodge from St. Louis, Missouri. Avid birders, they have been all over the world in pursuit of as many species of bird as possible. With over 100 species of bird present on Andros, Torrey and Lee had plenty of opportunities to add species to their list. They took eco tours to the north side of the island, participated in nature walks and spent the rest of their days relaxing around the lodge, spotting birds from the comfort of their lounge chairs!
All in all, they spotted over 35 species of birds, including 9 species they had never seen before! Pin It Now!

Ode To Small Hope

Banded sea, impossible greens
A sky, too blue
Breezes without a compass
Leaves that rattle
Bleached sand
Seaweed wrapped around toes
Burrs that stick for a painful moment to feet
Gaudy fish
Hungry birds
Lazy dogs
Cooks who smile
Food that pleases
Conversations that satisfy
Changing
Not changing
Going away
Returning

In the Wild World

While walking along our mile long stretch of private beach, some of our guests this week noticed two pairs of nesting ospreys. The birds were putting on an aerial (and vocal!) display while they searched around for the perfect nesting tree in our pine forest.
Ospreys are large raptors who have a mostly fish diet. They can spot fish from over 100 feet in the air and can dive to about 4 feet in the water, feet first, to snatch up their meal. Ospreys are found on every continent except for Antartica. They typically mate for life and can lay up to four eggs at a time. They use the same nesting sites annually, with some nesting sites having been used for 70 years! We at Small Hope hope that means we will be seeing these beautiful creatures for years to come!
