We Have a Brand New Hot Tub . . . and it's Awesome!

While we typically have ideal weather all year round, star gazing in a beachside hot tub, or a quick soak after 2 morning dives really can't be beat!

And it just got better at Small Hope because we have a brand new, luxury, deluxe, beach side hot tub!!!!!

The new tub is bigger, with a bench all the way around, and like the old one, completely heated by our solar power!!! And included in our all-inclusive rates!

Come down and see for yourself . . .

Things To Do on Andros Island, Bahamas . . .

Just because we are off the beaten track doesn't mean that there isn't plenty to do! Andros is an island adventure for the lucky few who come here . . .

Here are just a few of some of our favorite island experiences:
  1. Scuba Diving - We are situated right next to the Tongue of the Ocean, a mile-deep trench. Needless to say, we got some great wall diving. But we've also got several blue hole dives, a shark dive, coral gardens, caverns, and wrecks! Excellent diving from beginners to masters!
  2. Fishing - Andros Island is considered the Bonefish Capital of the World. Miles of pristine flats and waterways make this a bonefishing dream destination. But we've also got fantastic reef and deep-sea fishing too!
  3. Nature Tours and Birding - Andros is also known as "the Big Yard" because we have miles and miles of pristine national parks and forests. We have hundreds of inland blue holes, lots of local and migratory birds, all in a gorgeous setting . . .
  4. Sampling our favorite island dishes - Every Bahamas island has their own local flare, and Andros is no different! Come sample the Chicken Souse, or the "Fire Engine" Corned Beef. How about some Stew Conch, or Guava Duff? It's all here, and it's all delicious.
  5. Listening to some Bahamian music - Nothing completes the island experience better than listening to a local Bahamian band play their favorite tunes! At Small Hope, we have a band play on our "Bahamian Nights", then we have a beach bonfire!!!!
Bonus:

6. Crab Fest! - June on Andros means a great party! Crab Fest brings people from all over the Bahamas, as well as other countries. The festivities include live music, games, crafts, and crab cooked over 20 different ways . . . .Mmmmm!

Come to Andros and build your own adventure . . .

Renovations at Small Hope . . .

Here at Small Hope, there is a strong sense of tradition. We first opened our doors in 1960, and have been welcoming guests ever since then. We are a small, rustic, beach-front resort and we have no intention of getting bigger.

But we do want our cottages to be bright, beautiful, and comfortable for our guests!

This is why we have begun a property-wide renovation. We have completed one cabin - our "Honeymoon cabin" - and have a couple more almost finished. We hope to have all completed updated by the end of the year!

We are making some small changes here and there, but there are a few things that will never change:

  1. All our furniture is made right here
  2. All our fabrics are homemade right here on Andros at the Androsia Batik Factory
  3. Using natural and recycled materials, like the invasive casuarina pine we've cut from the property
  4. Our atmosphere of comfort and relaxation
See our beautiful upgrades . . .

We'll keep posting more as the cabins are completed!

What's in a Bahama Mama?

Ah, the Bahama Mama . . . A delicious concoction that taste like a sip of Paradise. But what exactly goes in this famously tasty beverage? Here is a recipe so you can have one any time you want!

Bahama Mama Recipe:

  • 1/2 oz. Nassau Royale
  • Top with fruit punch (we make our own from equal parts orange and pineapple juice, with a dash of grenadine for color)
  • Shake with ice
  • Add a dash of grenadine

A Kid-Friendly resort in the Bahamas!

When planning a vacation, we always want to make sure we find the right fit. This goes double for kids. Cuz when the kids have a great vacation, the whole family has a great vacation!

At Small Hope Bay Lodge, we know this and do our best to ensure the kids have a blast! We also like to give the parents a wonderful and, most importantly, stress-free vacation.

We are located in a secluded and very safe area. With two private beaches, we give the kids the space to roam around and explore but remain on property. We have a Games Room just for kids! (It's even being completely renovated right now - photos coming soon!). In there we have a kiddie castle, arts and crafts, their own cubbies, a ping pong table. We have a swing set with attached fort, located right on the beach so they can swing in style. We have Nature programs for the kids who want to learn more about our environment and the flora and fauna around the resort.

Our Kids Dining program is one that has been proven to be great for both parents and kids. At 6 pm, the kids go to our Games room with one of our highly capable babysitters. There, they have their meal together (kid-friendly meals or the adult menu of the day - their choice!). After dinner, they play, or make crafts, a play games. This gives the kids time to be just kids and the grown ups time for some adult time with the other adults at our cocktail hour and dinner.

We have Family Packages available or you can make you own! Call us for more info at 800-223-6961 or email at info@smallhope.com!

Not a bad view for the kids fort, huh?

Our New Bahamian Night!

At Small Hope Bay Lodge, we have been doing a Bahamian Night once every week or so for decades. On these nights we offer traditional Bahamian dishes like peas n' rice, coleslaw, conch salad, fresh snapper or grouper, and barbecue chicken to name a few. Also tasty desserts like our famous guava duff (yum!) . . .

But we've decided to dd some things to make it a truly Bahamian experience. This past week on Bahamian Night we had live local music by some of our very own staff, and topped the night off with a beach bonfire in our new bonfire pit!

It was fantastic! Great music, dancing, food and fun!!!

Come and see for yourself!

Some More Sustainable Practices at Small Hope!

As you may have read from a previous post, we at Small Hope maintain a continuous effort in being as Eco-friendly and environmentally sustainable. This means many things to us - it is why we installed solar energy and use only solar heated hot water, it is why we use water saving devices in our plumbling, why we have LED light bulbs in all fixtures on the property, and most recently, why we have started removing all of the Casuarina trees (also know as Australian Pine) from the property.

The Casuarinas are an invasive species and contribute to excessive beach erosion. In place of these trees we are planting many more coconut palms, as well as many varieties of native grasses and shrubs. Our staff can frequently be spotted along our beach planting and maintaining these new plants.

Come down and see our efforts for yourself, or let us know what practices you think are important for us to try!

Our Coconut Farm and Garden

Here on Andros, we are a world away from the busy "rat race". Things move at a slower pace, and that's a good thing! But it also means we have had to become very self-sufficient in many ways. We make our own furniture; we compost our food scraps; we turn used wine bottles into drinking glasses; and we grow our own plants for landscaping and some food too!

This means one of our favorite things here is our coconut farm and our garden. Our garden has all kinds of native and complimentary plants we use in our landscaping and for soil retention in the storms. We grow hibiscus, aloe vera (great for our sunburned guests too!), bougainvillea, seagrape, buttonwood, and more.

Our coconut trees come from the mature trees right here on property. Our grounds staff collects the fallen coconuts, plants them in a bucket of sand, and keeps them in the coco farm till they are large enough to be transplanted to their permanent home somewhere on the grounds.

Of course, some coconuts do not make it that far. Sore we use for their delicious water and meat for our staff and guests!
